You know that, although my life has been spent in the active practice of business, I have had no experience in explaining the theory, and that I can make no pretension to the learning or talent necessary for an author. It is, therefore, with considerable pain that I feel myself called before the public; but I am neither afraid nor ashamed to answer publicly for myself when I am publicly accused. I do not pretend to instruct either you or the public, but only to answer for myself and the Company of which I am Manager. If you find me somewhat prolix and indistinct, I hope you will make some allowance for my inexperience ; and even if you cannot approve of the practice which I defend, I hope you will not find that it proceeds from any principles or motives which you will condemn.

In this booklet Kumari Manu Gandhi describes a few incidents with Gandhiji. They throw light upon some aspects of Gandhiji’s character and activities.
Manu is a grandniece of Gandhiji. But he had constituted himself her ‘Mother’. Shortly after he had entered upon the last great mission of his life – namely, Hindu- Muslim Peace – in Noakhali (East Bengal) in September 1946, Manu joined him and was his only constant companion thenceforth till his martyrdom on the 30th January 1948. As such, these pen pictures will be read with great interest. They were first contributed to the Bhavnagar Samachar, a Gujarati weekly of Saurashtra – Kathiawad. They have been rendered into English by her friend.

The present book ‘Barrack Room Ballads’ is a collection of songs and ballads written in verses by celebrated writer Rudyard Kipling. These ballads deals with the late-Victorian British Army and mostly written in a vernacular dialect. The series contains some of Kipling’s most well-known work, including the poems “Gunga Din”, “Tommy” and “Danny Deever”, and helped consolidate his early fame as a poet.

I am a rather elderly man. It is an irreparable loss to literature. Bartleby was one of those beings of whom nothing is ascertainable, except from the original sources, and in his case those are very small. What my own astonished eyes saw of Bartleby, that is all I know of him, except, indeed, one vague report which will appear in the sequel.

First published in the year 1853, famous American English author Herman Melville’s short novella ‘Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall-Street’ begins when a Wall Street lawyer hires a new clerk who, after an initial bout of hard work, refuses to make copy and any other task required of him, with the words “I would prefer not to”.

Directing my characters and my story, then, towards the light of Reality wherever I could find it, I have not hesitated to violate some of the conventionalities of sentimental fiction. For instance, the first love-meeting of two of the personages in this book, occurs (where the real love-meeting from which it is drawn, occurred) in the very last place and under the very last circumstances which the artifices of sentimental writing would sanction. Will my lovers excite ridicule instead of interest, because I have truly represented them as seeing each other where hundreds of other lovers have first seen each other, as hundreds of people will readily admit when they read the passage to which I refer? I am sanguine enough to think not.

Ben-Hur; a tale of the Christ’ is historical fiction novel by Lew Wallace. It was first published in the year 1880. The story recounts in descriptive detail the adventures of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince from Jerusalem who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the 1st century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah’s narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus, from the same region and around the same age. The novel reflects themes of betrayal, conviction, and redemption, with a revenge plot that leads to a story of love and compassion.

The present book ‘Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush’ was written by Scottish author and theologian Rev. John Watson, known by his pen name Ian Maclaren. This work of fiction was first published in the year 1895.

Conceive the joy of a lover of nature who, leaving the art galleries, wanders out among the trees and wild flowers and birds that the pictures of the galleries have sentimentalised. It is some such joy that the man who truly loves the noblest in letters feels when tasting for the first time the simple delights of Russian literature. French and English and German authors, too, occasionally, offer works of lofty, simple naturalness; but the very keynote to the whole of Russian literature is simplicity, naturalness, veraciousness.

James Matthew Barrie,more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. He is best remembered for creating Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn Davies boys. Born in Kirriemuir, Angus, the second youngest of ten children, Barrie was educated at the Glasgow Academy, Forfar Academy and Dumfries Academy, and the University of Edinburgh. He became a journalist in Nottingham, then London, and turned to writing novels and subsequently plays. He is also credited for the invention or popularisation of the name “Wendy,” as only five records of girls named Wendy can be found before the 1910 United States Census.

It was as cold as Christmas, and Christmas Eve it was. A thin crust of snow lay over the level landscape of lower Virginia, and the declining sun cast a lovely rose-red light upon the silver world. Afar off lay the river that led to the great bay, both river and bay frozen hard and fast as steel. Beyond Good and Evil’ is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche that expands the ideas of his previous work, ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’, with a more critical and polemical approach. It was first published in 1886.

Philip K. Dick’s ‘Beyond Lies the Wub’ is a short science fiction story. This story was first published in the year 1952 in a magazine named the Planet Stories.

Beyond the City’ by Arthur Conan Doyle is an european novel which depicts the life of the protagonist driven by multiple desires such as romance, ambition, lust, deceit, etc. This can be read as one of Doyle’s trials at various fiction genres before specializing detective fiction.

Famous American writer Philip K. Dick’s short story ‘Beyond the Door’ was first published in the year 1954.
