आधुनिक कुंभ पर्व का धार्मिक रूप से प्रचार-प्रसार आदिगुरु शंकराचार्य ने किया था। उन्होंने पर्व की शुरुआत धार्मिक मान्यताओं को बढ़ावा देने और हिंदुओं को अपनी सनातन संस्कृति की पहचान दिलाने के उद्देश्य से की थी। आज भी कुंभ पर्व मुख्यतः साधु-संत समाज का ही पर्व माना जाता है। वस्तुतः कुंभ पर्व सनातन है। अग्नि पुराण, गरुड़ पुराण, वराह पुराण, कूर्म पुराण, वामन पुराण, मत्स्य पुराण, ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण, पद्म पुराण, शिव पुराण, विष्णु पुराण, स्कंद पुराण, लिंग पुराण, हरिवंश पुराण, श्रीमद्भागवत, महाभारत, वाल्मीकि रामायण तथा अन्य प्राचीन ग्रंथों, जैसे ऋग्वेद, अथर्ववेद, शतपथ ब्राह्मण में वर्णित आख्यानों से कुंभ पर्व की प्राचीनता का अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है। गौतम बुद्ध ने नदियों के तट पर आयोजित कुंभ पर्व को ‘नदी पर्व’ कहा है।
विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार—‘‘हजारों स्नान कार्तिक में, सैकड़ों स्नान माघ मास में किए हों तथा करोड़ों बार वैशाख में नर्मदा स्नान से जो पुण्य प्राप्त होता है, वही पुण्य एक बार कुंभ पर्व में स्नान करने से प्राप्त होता है।’’
