ऑरविल और विलबर बचपन से ही उड़ान भरने की अवधारणा के प्रति आकर्षित थे। आकाश में उड़ने की प्रेरणा उन्हें अनेक स्रोतों से मिली, जिसमें जर्मन व्यक्ति ओटो लिलियेनथल और अमेरिकी नागरिक ओक्टावे चांटू का नाम सम्मिलित था। इन दोनों ने ही ग्लाइडर के साथ उड़ान भरने की अवधारणा पर व्यापक स्तर पर काम किया था। यहाँ पर संभवतः सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण बात यह थी कि राइट ब्रदर्स के द्वारा किए गए काम के लिए सबसे बड़ी प्रेरणा बाजों व अन्य पक्षियों की उड़ान, आकाश में पलटने या अपने पंखों को फैलाने और सिकोड़ने के करतब बने, वे इस बात को अच्छी तरह से समझ चुके थे कि यह उनके पंखों का ही कमाल था, जो उन्हें आकाश में अपना संतुलन बनाए रखने हेतु मजबूत आधार देते हैं। राइट ब्रदर्स ने सन् 1900 में पहली बार अपने द्विपंखी विमान का निर्माण करने के लिए इस अवधारणा को आधार बनाया, जिसे उन्होंने ‘विंग्स वॉर्पिंग’ का नाम दिया। उन्होंने हवा में उड़ने के लिए तैयार विमान को बनाने से पूर्व अपने मॉडल विंग्स के 200 भिन्न-भिन्न संस्करण तैयार किए। अंततः 17 दिसंबर, 1903 को विलबर और ऑरविल को सफलता प्राप्त हुई। उस दिन ऑरविल ने आकाश में उड़ान भरने और पूर्ण रूप से चालक के नियंत्रण में रहनेवाले विमान पर सवार होकर इतिहास रचा। यह कारनामा उन्होंने उत्तरी कोरोलिना के किटी हॉक के रेत के टीलों पर किया। उन्होंने 12 सेकंड तक 120 फीट की ऊँचाई पर उड़ान भरी।
