The full name of Cariappa was Kodandera Madappa Cariappa. He was the pride of Indian army . He was born on January 28, 1899, at a place called Shanivavsante, in eastern part of Coorg in Karnataka. The place is now known as Kodagn. Cariappa’ s father Kodandera was a revenue officer in Madikeri. He used to stay with his family at Lime Cottage. Cariappa had three brothers and two sisters. Everyone at Cariappa’ s home addressed him affectionately as ‘Chimma’.

The full name of Field Marshal Manekshaw is Sam Hormushji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw. He was born on April 3, 1914 at Amritsar in a Parsi family. His father H.F. Manekshaw was a doctor. Once, when his father was going from Bombay to Lahore in search of employment, due to change in decision, he had to get down at Amritsar in Punjab. As a result he settled down in Punjab. He had four sons and two daughters. Sam was their fifth child.

एयर मार्शल के.सी. करिअप्पा (से.नि.) ने सन् 1957 में भारतीय वायुसेना में कमीशन प्राप्त किया। उनकी तैनाती 20 नं. स्क्वाड्रन में हुई, जहाँ वह छह वर्ष तक रहे। नवंबर 1963 में वह चेन्नई के फ्लाइट इंस्ट्रक्टर्स स्कूल से स्नातक हुए। 22 सितंबर, 1965 को शत्रु के ठिकानों पर आक्रमण के दौरान दुश्मन ने उनका विमान मार गिराया। वह युद्धबंदी बना लिये गए और 22 जनवरी, 1966 को मुक्त हुए।
युद्ध में लगे घावों के कारण करिअप्पा कुछ अरसे तक लड़ाकू विमान उड़ाने में असमर्थ करार दिए गए। इस दौरान उन्होंने तत्कालीन वायुसेनाध्यक्ष के सहायक के रूप में कार्य किया। बँगलादेश के स्वाधीनता संग्राम के अंत तक वह इसी यूनिट में रहे। युद्ध में अदम्य वीरता के प्रदर्शन के लिए उन्हें वायुसेना मेडल से सम्मानित किया गया।
वर्ष 1994 में उनकी पदोन्नति एयर मार्शल के पद पर हुई। इसी वर्ष जोधपुर के दक्षिण-पश्चिम वायु कमान के कमांडर-इन-चीफ नियुक्त हुए। भारतीय वायुसेना में विशिष्ट सेवा के लिए राष्ट्रपति ने जनवरी 1965 में ‘परम विशिष्ट सेवा मेडल’ से सम्मानित किया। जनवरी 1996 में सेवानिवृत्त।
