The Philebus, is a Socratic dialogue written in the 4th century BC by Plato. Besides Socrates the other interlocutors are Philebus and Protarchus. Philebus, who advocates the life of physical pleasure, hardly participates, and his position is instead defended by Protarchus, who learnt argumentation from Sophists.

From time to time since the American occupation of the Islands, Philippine folk-tales have appeared in scientific publications, but never, so far as the writer is aware, has there been an attempt to offer to the general public a comprehensive popular collection of this material. It is my earnest hope that this collection of tales will give those who are interested opportunity to learn something of the magic, superstitions, and weird customs of the Filipinos, and to feel the charm of their wonder-world as it is pictured by these dark-skinned inhabitants of our Island possessions.

Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Latin)’ by Sir Isaac Newton was first published in the year 1687 in Latin. It is a work in three books. It is regarded as one of the most important works in the history of science. It states Newton’s laws of motion, forming the foundation of classical mechanics, Newton’s law of universal gravitation, and a derivation of Kepler’s laws of planetary motion.

In the preparation of this text, the pupil, his experience, needs, and interests have been constantly kept in mind. The order of topics, illustrations, and problems have been selected with the purpose of leading the pupil into a clear understanding of the physical phenomena continually taking place about him.

The recommendations and conclusions reached by the “New Movement in the Teaching of Physics” have been incorporated into the book as a whole. These conclusions indicate that the most efficient teaching in physics involves a departure from the quantitative, mathematical methods of presentation that were in general use a dozen or more years ago, toward a method better adapted to the capabilities, interests, and requirements of the young people in our physics classes.

First published in the year 1987, American Pulitzer Prize winner playwright Susan Glaspell’s present book ‘Plays’ is a compandium of four of her most famous plays : Trifles, The Outside, The Verge, and Inheritors.

Believing plays to be solely for the stage, I have never before allowed any of mine to be printed until they had first faced from a stage the judgment of an audience, to see if they were entitled to be called plays at all. A successful production also has been sometimes a moral support to me when some critic has said, as for instance of “A Night at an Inn,” that though it reads passably it could never act.

But in this book I have made an exception to this good rule (as it seems to me), and that exception is “The Flight of the Queen.” I know too little of managers and theatres to know what to do with it, and have a feeling that it will be long before it is ever acted, and am too fond of this play to leave it in obscurity. This beautiful story has been lying about the world for countless centuries, without ever having been dramatized. It is the story of a royal court, which I have merely adapted to the stage. The date that I have given is accurate; it happened in June; and happens every June; perhaps in some corner of the reader’s garden. It is the story of the bees.

The present book is a collection of poems of a celebrated modern Bohemian-Australian poet René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke, better known as Rainer Maria Rilke.

It requires some assurance to step out of the conventional in story writing. Especially does it require courage on the part of one whose ideals of what a story should be are far beyond what his productions can ever attain. But the physician, who gets closer to things human than others do, may perhaps be forgiven unorthodox subjects and methods of expression. Surely, also, he will be excused for drawing upon his own field of work for his subject matter.

Poor White is an American novel by Sherwood Anderson, published in 1920.

The most careless reader can hardly fail to see that many of the Tales in this volume have the same groundwork as those with which he has been familiar from his earliest youth. They are Nursery Tales, in fact, of the days when there were tales in nurseries—old wives’ fables, which have faded away before the light of gas and the power of steam. It is long, indeed, since English nurses told these tales to English children by force of memory and word of mouth. In a written shape, we have long had some of them, at least, in English versions of the Contes de ma Mère l’ Oye of Perrault, and the Contes de Fées of Madame D’Aulnoy; those tight-laced, high- heeled tales of the ‘teacup times’ of Louis XIV and his successors, in which the popular tale appears to as much disadvantage as an artless country girl in the stifling atmosphere of a London theatre.

Our Post Exchanges are usually in charge of officers with little or no experience in book-keeping, their assistants are usually enlisted men and not professional clerks and accountants, and there is, at present, no codified or standard system prescribed for handling this business. Some parts of the Post Exchange Regulations have become antiquated through the developments of modern business methods such as the “Voucher Check System”.

In view of these facts it is felt that there is a real need of this book, and it is hoped that the methods herein set forth will prove to be a step toward a uniform system that will be adopted in all Exchanges, one that will reduce overhead charges, eliminate unnecessary labor and improve unsatisfactory profits.

THE literature relating to the care of the human body is already very extensive. Much has been written about the body’s proper food, the air it should breathe, the clothing by which it should be protected, the best methods of its development. That literature needs but little added to it, until we, as rational beings, come nearer to obeying the laws which it discloses, and to feeling daily the help which comes from that obedience.
