Banks and Exchange Companies by George Kinnear
You know that, although my life has been spent in the active practice of business, I have had no experience in explaining the theory, and that I can make no pretension to the learning or talent necessary for an author. It is, therefore, with considerable pain that I feel myself called before the public; but I am neither afraid nor ashamed to answer publicly for myself when I am publicly accused. I do not pretend to instruct either you or the public, but only to answer for myself and the Company of which I am Manager. If you find me somewhat prolix and indistinct, I hope you will make some allowance for my inexperience ; and even if you cannot approve of the practice which I defend, I hope you will not find that it proceeds from any principles or motives which you will condemn.

Barbarians by Robert W. Chambers
o this is what happened to the dozen-odd malcontents who could no longer stand the dirty business in Europe and the dirtier politicians at home.
There was treachery in the Senate, treason in the House. A plague of liars infested the Republic; the land was rotting with plots.
But if the authorities at Washington remained incredulous, stunned into impotency, while the din of murder filled the world, a few mere men, fed up on the mess, sickened while awaiting executive galvanization, and started east to purge their souls.

The late Mr Waterton having, some time ago, expressed his opinion that ravens are gradually becoming extinct in England, I offered the few following words about my experience of these birds.
The raven in this story is a compound of two great originals, of whom I was, at different times, the proud possessor.
Baron Trump’s Marvellous Underground Journey by Ingersoll Lockwood
As doubting Thomases seem to take particular pleasure in popping up on all occasions, Jack-in-the-Box-like, it may be well to head them off in this particular instance by proving that Baron Trump was a real baron, and not a mere baron of the mind. The family was originally French Huguenot—De la Trompe—which, upon the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, took refuge in Holland, where its head assumed the name of Van der Troomp, just as many other of the French Protestants rendered their names into Dutch. Some years later, upon the invitation of the Elector of Brandenburg, Niklas Van der Troomp became a subject of that prince, and purchased a large estate in the province of Pomerania, again changing his name, this time to Von Troomp.

Bartholomew Fair by Ben Jonson
Stage. Gentlemen, have a little patience, they are e’en upon coming, instantly. He that should begin the play, master Littlewit, the proctor, has a stitch new fallen in his black silk stocking; ’twill be drawn up ere you can tell twenty: he plays one o’ the Arches that dwells about the hospital, and he has a very pretty part. But for the whole play, will you have the truth on’t?—I am looking, lest the poet hear me, or his man, master Brome, behind the arras—it is like to be a very conceited scurvy one, in plain English. When’t comes to the Fair once, you were e’en as good go to Virginia, for any thing there is of Smithfield.
Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street by Herman Melville
I am a rather elderly man. The nature of my avocations for the last thirty years has brought me into more than ordinary contact with what would seem an interesting and somewhat singular set of men, of whom as yet nothing that I know of has ever been written:—I mean the law-copyists or scriveners. I have known very many of them, professionally and privately, and if I pleased, could relate divers histories, at which good-natured gentlemen might smile, and sentimental souls might weep. But I waive the biographies of all other scriveners for a few passages in the life of Bartleby, who was a scrivener of the strangest I ever saw or heard of. While of other law-copyists I might write the complete life, of Bartleby nothing of that sort can be done. I believe that no materials exist for a full and satisfactory biography of this man. It is an irreparable loss to literature. Bartleby was one of those beings of whom nothing is ascertainable, except from the original sources, and in his case those are very small. What my own astonished eyes saw of Bartleby, that is all I know of him, except, indeed, one vague report which will appear in the sequel.

Basic Religious Books of the Hindus by Manju Sehgal
Hinduism has an extraordi1 Inary wealth of scriptures but people have no time to read the religious books like Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads etc. Therefore, an attempt has been made to have a single volume that forms the foundation of our civilisation’s heritage to seek inspiration and a sense of direction in our lives.
The Vedas prescribe some regulations and if someone follows them, one will be free from material entanglement. The Puranas, each named after a deity Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, are the post vedic texts which contain a complete narrative of the history on the Universe from creation to destruction. The Upanishads represent the essence of the Vedas. The Smritis explain and elaborate the Vedas, making them understandable and more meaningful to the general population. The Bhagwad Gita is in the form of a dialogue between Arjuna and Lord Krishna who teaches him to do his duty. The Mahabharata is not only an epic but tells the tale of heroic people, containing a code of life, a philosophy of social and ethical relations. The Ramcharitamanas provides the guidelines for an ideal family, an ideal king and an ideal mother.
This book gives a brief about holy books of Hinduisma must read for every Hindu and Bharatiya.
Basics of Tarot by Manisha Koushik
Tarot is a divination tool that not only shows the current situation of the person concerned but also gives an idea of what steps should be taken. This clarity is obtained through the pictorial presentation of the cards. Once the cards are held in the hands and are concentrated upon, the answers appear automatically in the cards.
Through this book one can quickly and easily learn the meanings of the cards along with a few spreads that would help in day to day readings. The tarot cards are 56 in number and for ease are divided into 4 suits namely – Wands, Cups, Swords and Coins. Seems Tough? Do not worry! For making it simple, a grid between numerology and the archetypes of the four suits has been provided which would help a novice to easily remember the meanings. Thus instead of 56 cards only 18 cards have to be understood. The tricks and shortcuts further simplify the cards and make it easy to memorize them.
The main aim of writing this book is to equip one with a reference book to guide those interested in learning this mystical science. Easy keywords have been given to memorize the cards, and short descriptions provided for reference.
Basil by Wilkie Collins
Directing my characters and my story, then, towards the light of Reality wherever I could find it, I have not hesitated to violate some of the conventionalities of sentimental fiction. For instance, the first love-meeting of two of the personages in this book, occurs (where the real love-meeting from which it is drawn, occurred) in the very last place and under the very last circumstances which the artifices of sentimental writing would sanction. Will my lovers excite ridicule instead of interest, because I have truly represented them as seeing each other where hundreds of other lovers have first seen each other, as hundreds of people will readily admit when they read the passage to which I refer? I am sanguine enough to think not.
Bat Wing by Sax Rohmer
Toward the hour of six on a hot summer’s evening Mr. Paul Harley was seated in his private office in Chancery Lane reading through a number of letters which Innes, his secretary, had placed before him for signature. Only one more remained to be passed, but it was a long, confidential report upon a certain matter, which Harley had prepared for His Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department. He glanced with a sigh of weariness at the little clock upon his table before commencing to read.
“Shall detain you only a few minutes, now, Knox,” he said.
I nodded, smiling. I was quite content to sit and watch my friend at work.
Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War by Herman Melville
“With few exceptions, the Pieces in this volume originated in an impulse imparted by the fall of Richmond. They were composed without reference to collective arrangement, but being brought together in review, naturally fall into the order assumed.
“The events and incidents of the conflict—making up a whole, in varied amplitude, corresponding with the geographical area covered by the war—from these but a few themes have been taken, such as for any cause chanced to imprint themselves upon the mind.” -Preface

Be a Humble Winner by Suresh Mohan Semwal
If I were to ask you to pen down the top ten reasons for your success in life. What would you write? I know you can’t just write ten, there will be thirty reasons. But still in your top 10 list you might have the following reasons:
1. Hardwork
2. Commitment
3. Patience
4. Honesty
5. Discipline
6. Dedication
7. Positive Attitude
8. Skills
9. Education
10. Attention to details
We have a very natural tendency to overestimate our contribution in case of success and underestimate in case of failure. Is it not so? There are always people who help/assist/guide/supervise/motivate us to attain success. We tend to remember those who hurt rather than who help. If we really observe our life events and success we will realise that there are many people without whom we could not have become successful. So always be a humble winner!

Beautiful Life Beyond Exams by N. Raghuraman
Some teachers go beyond their job descriptions. I remember when I first entered my school called Saraswathi Vidyalaya at Nagpur the first teacher was Mrs. Saraswathi Kuppuswami, who met my father for few seconds and took charge of me, maybe my life, held my hand and took me into her class. I looked back with teary eyes and as my father turned his back, may be he was uneasy in seeing me crying, I looked at my teacher’s eyes. Her eyes had that assurance I needed her eyes had the love and the care I needed most. Since then I’ve never looked back. On that day, unknowingly, I learnt my first lesson—stand like a rock with love and care when somebody needs you the most.
Dear teachers, let me confess here that I may not remember all the theories you taught me, despite the fact that I spent days studying them. But I remember the little stories that made the entire class laugh, I remember those silly biology projects in which the live frogs ran away from the laboratory, and I distinctly remember that remark, “ask questions, it is okay to ask silly questions and make silly mistakes.”
This book is a compilation of stories revolving around teachers and students who look beyond pressure of exams and grades.

Before Adam by Jack London
Pictures! Pictures! Pictures! Often, before I learned, did I wonder whence came the multitudes of pictures that thronged my dreams; for they were pictures the like of which I had never seen in real wake-a-day life. They tormented my childhood, making of my dreams a procession of nightmares and a little later convincing me that I was different from my kind, a creature unnatural and accursed.
Behind A Mask or, A Woman’s Power by Louisa May Alcott
“Has she come?”
“No, Mamma, not yet.”
“I wish it were well over. The thought of it worries and excites me. A cushion for my back, Bella.”
And poor, peevish Mrs. Coventry sank into an easy chair with a nervous sigh and the air of a martyr, while her pretty daughter hovered about her with affectionate solicitude.
“Who are they talking of, Lucia?” asked the languid young man lounging on a couch near his cousin, who bent over her tapestry work with a happy smile on her usually haughty face.
Bel-Ami by Guy de Maupassant
When the cashier had given him the change out of his five francpiece, George Duroy left the restaurant.
As he had a good carriage, both naturally and from his military training, he drew himself up, twirled his moustache, and threw upon the lingering customers a rapid and sweeping glance—one of those glances which take in everything within their range like a casting net.
Belle-Rose by Amédée Achard

Best Management Quotes by Suresh Mohan Semwal
Quotes are valuable. They are knowledge, and wisdom and insight. They offer us the opportunity to learn through others. Quotations are great tools to reinforce and reaffirm what we already understand. Sometimes hearing the words of a famous or successful person is enough to help us accept an idea and put it into action. Experience is the best teacher, no doubts about it but waiting for your own experience to teach you everything can be expensive or very late at times. Human beings have the capability to learn from other’s experiences too.
Keeping all this mind I came up with this idea of compilation of greatest management thoughts of great people. I am sure these thoughts will trigger lot of positivity and inspiration in our day to day lives. It will work like seeds for our fertile mind.
Best Russian Short Stories by Leonid Andreyev et al.; Chekov, Dostoyevsky, Pushkin, Gogol, etc.
Conceive the joy of a lover of nature who, leaving the art galleries, wanders out among the trees and wild flowers and birds that the pictures of the galleries have sentimentalised. It is some such joy that the man who truly loves the noblest in letters feels when tasting for the first time the simple delights of Russian literature. French and English and German authors, too, occasionally, offer works of lofty, simple naturalness; but the very keynote to the whole of Russian literature is simplicity, naturalness, veraciousness.
