Tipu Sultan
Tipu Sultan died as he lived, a free man. A childhood spent watching and helping in his father’s campaigns had made him a shrewd general. From his father he also inherited courage and a sense of honor and, most importantly, the determination to oust the British from Indian soil. But this noble 18th-century warrior had no weapon against treachery.
Tirupati
“When Vishnu returned to Vaikuntha after his Krishna avatar, Brahma, the creator, began to worry about the earth. Without Vishnu, he was afraid, chaos would ensue. So he and his son Narada, the wandering sage, set in motion a plan to get Vishnu to return to earth.
A talking anthill, an arrogant sage, an irate cowherd, and even the asura king Ravana, each have their parts to play in these stories that describe the founding of the Venkateshwara temple at Tirupati. Set amongst the lovely Tirumala hills, this temple to Lord Vishnu, is one of the most beautiful temples in the world. It is said that more than 50,000 people visit this shrine every day, to pray to Venkateshwara to wash away their sins.”
Tiruppan and Kanakadasa
“Tiruppan was a great devotee of Lord Ranganatha, but he was never allowed inside the temple because he belonged to the sweeper community. Dismayed by the rigidities of the caste system, Tiruppan sank into depression, convinced that only death would erase the barriers created by mankind. But Lord Ranganatha had other plans for him.
Kanakadasa was also a victim of the caste system. However, his unwavering devotion soon convinced even the most orthodox that in the eyes of God, everyone was equal. Kanakadasa’s songs are still sung all over Karnataka, even though it has been hundreds of years since he died. In this Amar Chitra Katha, it is God who plays the role of reformer, elevating those who truly worship him.

Valmiki Ramayana
Valmiki’s Ramayana is believed to be the first poetic work written in Sanskrit; it is, therefore, referred to as the Adikavya. It is said that Brahma assured Valmiki that “as long as the mountains stand and the rivers flow, so long shall the Ramayana be read by men”. In the Puranas, Rama is described as an avatar of Vishnu, but Valmiki does not refer to him as God. The few verses which do so are considered interpolations. The Ramayana consists of 24,000 verses. There are six sections – The Bala Kanda, the Ayodhya Kanda, the Aranya Kanda, the Kishkindha Kanda, the Sundara Kanda and the Yuddha Kanda. The seventh section, the Uttara Kanda, is probably an interpolation. Valmiki’s monumental work influenced other great poems on the same theme. Among these are the Hindi, Tamil and Bengali versions of the Ramayana written by Tulsidas in the North; Kamban in the South; and Krittivasa in the East. The Ramayana has made a deep and abiding impact. Bas reliefs and paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana are to be found not only in temples all over India, but also in Indonesia and Angkor Vat, Kampuchea.

Vidyasagar
Such was his mastery over Sanskrit that the Sanskrit College of Kolkata conferred the title ‘Vidyasagar’ on its young student. Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar (1820-1891) went on to become the principal of the same college. As Inspector of schools, he established several schools in Bengal, particularly for girls. He simplified Bengali to make it easy for the common man. He is thus regarded as the Father of modern Bengali prose. A gentle crusader, he championed the cause of women.
