अचानक ही धन देवी लक्ष्मी जी गहरे संताप में आ गई कि कल तक उसका आस्तिक उपासक, जो 500 और 1000 रुपए के अविनाशी नोटों को अपनी तिजोरियों, अलमारियों यहाँ तक कि अपने डबलबेड के बॉक्स व गद्दों के नीचे सँभाल-सँभालकर रखता था, बेनागा प्रतिदिन उसके आगे अगरबत्ती और दीपक जलाकर उसकी पूजा भी किया करता था, आज अचानक नास्तिक हो गया है। नास्तिक ही नहीं, जल्लाद बन गया है और उसे गंदे, मटमैले-कुचैले थैलों में भर-भरकर घर से बेघर करने पर आमादा हो गया है। हैवानियत उसके सिर चढ़कर अपना काम कर रही है। वह वर्षों से प्यार से सँजोकर रखी हुई अपनी लक्ष्मी को रात के अँधेरे में नदी-नालों, गटर, कूड़ेदान व आस-पास की झाड़-झाडि़यों में फेंकने पर आमादा हो गया है। उसे आज अपनी सुख-समृद्धि का बिलकुल भी ध्यान नहीं है। इस समय उसके लिए सुख-समृद्धि जाए चूल्हे में या फिर कहीं भी जाए, उसकी बला से! उसे तो इस समय अपने वैभव से ज्यादा अपने घर की लक्ष्मी को गुप्त रूप से ठिकाने लगाने की चिंता है। वह पहले उसे पाने के लिए अपना दिन-रात एक करता था। रात में सोता अपनी पत्नी के साथ था, परंतु खयालों में उसे ही रखता था। रात में बिस्तर पर करवटें बदलता था तो अपने गद्दों के नीचे बिछाकर रखी हुई, अपनी धन-लक्ष्मी को जब तब झाँक-झाँककर भरपूर देख नहीं लेता, तब तक उसे नींद नहीं आती थी।
