Indian War Comics
Indian War Comics – Bullets don’t bounce off their chests. Nor do they have superhuman powers to unleash webs or hoist themselves into the air, voluminous capes and all. What they do have is extraordinary courage. Meet the heroes of the Indian War Comics, a series that began in 2008 with a comic on Kargil martyr Captain Vikram Batra. The third one, commemorating Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan of 26/11 fame, will be released on Independence Day. If the cover is any indication—a fiery-eyed Maj. Unnikrishnan aiming his rifle at the enemy against the backdrop of a burning Taj Mahal Hotel, all the while supporting his injured colleague—the portrayal of the protagonist will fit snugly into the superhero mould, though it will also dwell on his early life and influences.
It was ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’, Capt. Batra’s famous rallying cry on the icy heights of Kargil that inspired the series creator, Aditya Bakshi, to immortalise India’s military heroes through speech bubbles. A merchant navy officer and a General’s son, reared on dog-eared Commando comics, Aditya found himself moved to tears after a chat with his father about Capt. Batra, who died at the age of 24. “There was a lot of material available on him, but only in the regimental format of historical accounts, which would hardly appeal to children. I wanted to make these heroes known to the widest possible audience, and in a more permanent way than the odd TV programme.”
So, armed with a pencil, Aditya began to give shape to his idea, even doing the early drawings himself. Later, the realisation that the text he was penning needed professionally executed visuals sent him off to the Delhi College of Art with an ‘artist wanted’ poster. A student, Pradeep Yadav, came forward and Yeh Dil Maange More, the first black-and-white Indian War Comic—82 pages long, priced at Rs. 65 and merging facts and imagination with gusto—was born. While it is public knowledge that Capt. Batra single-handedly overpowered five enemy soldiers, approaching their bunker from the back after a perilous climb; the comic drew upon all the resources of the genre to illustrate how it was done—with a little creative license thrown in. For instance, it has Capt. Batra shout out the lines: “Yes, it’s raining bullets and perhaps we die. But what more worthy death can one hope for? Come on men, this is what we dreamed of…to die a soldier’s death and live forever.” It even has a bit role for journalist Barkha Dutt, who interviewed Capt. Batra at Kargil.
Encouraged by the fact that a few thousand readers actually bought the comic, distributed by Om Books International, Aditya went on to launch his second comic, the True Maratha, on Ashok Chakra-winning Colonel N.J. Nair, who ignored his eventually fatal wounds to lead from the front and break an ambush by Naga insurgents. Two more are in the pipeline—on Param Vir Chakra winner Capt. Bana Singh, the only one of the heroes who is still alive, and on Ashok Chakra awardee, Commando Sanjog Chhetri.

An emagazine for children brought to you by Business Economics inspired by the vision of the SREI Foundation
Sophisticated flying machines…a near exact computation of the speed of light… the calculation of the value of ‘Pi,’… state-of-the-art astronomical observatories… advanced medical and surgical knowledge…sophisticated strategies of statecraft and defense…the list goes on. No, this is not a list of achievements or advances made y any modern “first-world” nation. These are but a few of the remarkable achievements of Indians through the ages. A curiosity to discover all things Indian and a passion to inculcate in present-day children a love for their country and a pride in its achievements in every field inspired the creation of this emagazine, “Sparks” targeted at children between the ages of 5
and 12. Sparks, aims at offering children a panoramic view of a diverse India, but an India that is unified not only in the magnificence of its landscape and its culturescape, but unified as a nation of great thinkers, reformers, artistes, artisans, scientists, doctors and visionaries. We hope to achieve this effectively in this emagazine format which offers a
high degree of interactivity, thus making it both informative and yet entertaining. We aim at offering our young readers a holistic and yet secular lens to understand and appreciate the culture and value system of their country, while at the same time, reiterating the relevance of integrating ancient and traditional knowledge systems, with contemporary modes of living, studying and working. In other words, at a time, when our children are strongly influenced by the west, it is our guiding mission to open their eyes to the richness and relevance of the culture they come from so that they learn to accept and celebrate their Indianness rather than hide it behind a westernized façade.
J.R.D TATA (Hindi)
Born in Paris in July 1904, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata was the second child of Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his French wife Sooni. His childhood was spent in different countries and he schooled in Paris, Mumbai and Yokohama. A joyride on a plane sparked off a passion for soaring in the skies. It was then that the fifteen-year-old boy decided that one day he too would fly. He had to wait ten years for it to happen. The first flight of the Indian civil aviation took off at Karachi in October 15, 1932 with JRD Tata at the controls of a Puss Moth that he flew solo to Ahmedabad and onward to Bombay. In 1938 at the age of thirty four, JRD was placed at the head of India’s largest industrial empire. For over half a century, JRD guided the destiny of the Tatas. Despite enormous pressure on his time, JRD took the role of citizen very seriously and never failed to be of service to the nation. He was a patron of the arts and supported India’s progress to become a scientifically advanced nation. For these endeavors, JRD Tata was awarded the country’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna in 1992. Yet he remained at heart a simple, unassuming person, who refused to take himself seriously. Years after his pioneering flight on the Puss Moth, he re-enacted the event to inspire a little hope and enthusiasm in young people of the country.

Jawaharlal Nehru
From his father he learned social etiquette from his mother, India’s age-old philosophy and culture. From his Muslim mentor he learned to respect different faiths and from his English tutor the best of Western and Indian thought. But none of them could have molded the young Jawaharlal Nehru into the fiercely idealistic Indian so famous throughout the world today, that distinction he achieved by his own intelligence, keen observation and hard work.
Jayaprakash Narayan
Bandits and bullies both relied on his sense of fair play. When, as a boy, he tended to pet animals rather than play with his toys, people thought he was simple-headed. It was this spirit of kindness, however, that guided his lifelong fight against injustice and inequality. The rough and tumble of political life may have bewildered him but the country recognized in Jayaprakash Narayan an honest, brilliant and selfless Gandhian.

Khudiram Bose
“To curb the rising tide of Indian nationalism, Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy, partitioned Bengal in 1905. The outcome however, went counter to the expectations of the British. It evoked a nationalist upsurge of an extreme and violent nature, in which several young Indians resorted to terrorist tactics, The more ruthless the repression, the more violent did the expression of nationalism become. It was to this brand of nationalism that Khudiram Bose belonged. He was hanged by the British for hurling a bomb at a phaeton, which he mistakenly thought to be carrying Kingsford, the judge of Calcutta.
Following his hanging, the government rounded many revolutionaries in Calcutta. At Alipore began the hearing of the first case of large-scale conspiracy, led by Aurobindo Ghosh. C.R. Das was the Defence Counsel for this case. Inside the jail, a new turn was given to the freedom struggle by a startling incident in which Naren Gossain, the approver of the case, was shot dead by Indian revolutionaries. Aurobindo Ghosh ended his life as the Saint of Pondicherry and C.R. Das as Desh Bandhu. “

The whole world became perturbed, and the predominating deity of this earth, known as Bhu Devi, along with other Gods went to see Lord Vishnu, the supreme power, and appraised him about calamities, that were to occur, due to the demoniac kings. You are driving the chariot of your sister and your brother-in-law, but you do not know that the eighth child of this sister will kill you.”When Devaki became pregnant for the seventh time, she was joyful but at the same time she was sorry that as soon as her child would be born, Kansa would kill him. Soon Balram was born to Rohini and Devaki became pregnant with her eighth child, Krishna. Kansa comes to know about this through his spies and immediately increases the prison’s security.

Lord Vishnu instructs Vasudev to take the baby to Gokul, and exchange the baby with the just-born daughter of Yashoda and Nand.
