The present volume differs from a text-book of seismology in giving brief, though detailed, accounts of individual earthquakes rather than a discussion of the phenomena and distribution of earthquakes in general. At the close of his Les Tremblements de Terre, Professor Fouqué has devoted a few chapters to some of the principal earthquakes between 1854 and 1887; and there are also the well-known chapters in Lyell’s Principles of Geology dealing with earthquakes of a still earlier date. With these exceptions, there is no other work covering the same ground; and he who wishes to study any particular earthquake can only do so by reading long reports or series of papers written perhaps in several different languages. The object of this volume is to save him this trouble, and to present to him the facts that seem most worthy of his attention.

This book is aimed at understanding the esoteric Hinduism through a detailed study of the Bhagavata Purana which is the most popular of all Puranas and is held in the highest esteem by the Vaishnavas in all parts of India.

This book makes no pretense of giving to the world a new theory of the intellectual operations. Its claim to attention, if it possess any, is grounded on the fact that it is an attempt, not to supersede, but to embody and systematize, the best ideas which have been either promulgated on its subject by speculative writers, or conformed to by accurate thinkers in their scientific inquiries.

First published in the year 1859, the present novel ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by famous Victorian novelist Charles Dickens is set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette imprisoned 18 years in the Bastille in Paris, his release from prison and into life in London with his daughter Lucie, whom he had never met, her marriage and the collision between her beloved husband and the people who decades earlier caused her father to be imprisoned. Monsieur and Madame Defarge, sellers of wine in a poor suburb of Paris also figure in the Doctor’s story. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution, and the worst year of it, the Reign of Terror.

Sinnett began his book, The Occult World, the first popular exposition of Theosophy, published thirty years ago. In the course of May 1916, the Italian authorities expressed a desire that some independent observer from Great Britain should visit their lines and report his impressions. It was at the time when our brave and capable allies had sustained a set-back in the Trentino owing to a sudden concentration of the Austrians, supported by very heavy artillery. I was asked to undertake this mission. In order to carry it out properly, I stipulated that I should be allowed to visit the British lines first, so that I might have some standard of comparison. The War Office kindly assented to my request. Later I obtained permission to pay a visit to the French front as well. Thus it was my great good fortune, at the very crisis of the war, to visit the battle line of each of the three great Western allies. I only wish that it had been within my power to complete my experiences in this seat of war by seeing the gallant little Belgian army which has done so remarkably well upon the extreme left wing of the hosts of freedom.

First published in the year 1916, the present book ‘A Voice in the Wilderness’ was written by the famous writer Grace Livingston Hill. This novel is a fictional christian romance.

The following pages were written during leisure hours of the last six or eight weeks, of which “the times” have thrown rather too many upon the writer’s hands; and the statement of this fact, I conceive to be a tacit admission, that such hours might have been better employed.
They were originally composed for the writer’s own amusement; to beguile the tediousness of otherwise idle time. And not the least motive for this indulgence was a desire to abstract the mind from too near a contemplation of the dark side of that picture, which I have described as a panic. They were not written in the first place, with any view to publication, but as each chapter was successively read in the presence of friends, and principally for amusement, those friends at length advised their publication; and with their advice they have been submitted to the press, in the original manuscript, almost without correction.

She left her china and heavy furniture to others, and to her granddaughter Laura – the secret of her dream of finer things. Grandma Deal’s literary aspirations had been thwarted by the hard circumstances of her life, but Laura vows that nothing, no one, will deter her from a successful writing career. Childhood passes, and the more she repeats her vow the more life intervenes.

First published in the year 1893, the present book ‘A Woman of No Importance’ is a drama written by one of the most revered English writers – Oscar Wilde. Like Wilde’s other society plays, it satirizes English upper class society.

First published in the year 1851, the present children’s book ‘A Wonder Book for Girls & Boys’ by Nathaniel Hawthorne in which he retells several Greek myths. It was followed by a sequel, ‘Tanglewood Tales’.

The following stories have been written by A. L. O. E. since her arrival in India, for the use of native readers. It is deemed most desirable by those who thoroughly know the people, that their minds should be trained in the first principles of morality, as well as of religion, by means of amusing fictions, as they are particularly fond of stories. A. L. O. E. desires, therefore, to devote her pen to the service of the land of her adoption, as there are, comparatively speaking, hardly any writers who enjoy the advantage of having the peculiar habits and failings of Hindus, Mohammedans, Sikhs, and native converts, perpetually brought before their notice, as is, or should be, the case with a member of a missionary band.
If her little “Indian Stories” be acceptable in her dear native land, she will be thankful; but the object which she chiefly aims at is to write in a way to amuse, and through amusement to instruct, the people of the country of her adoption.

Form a ring!” A dozen or more excited boys shouted these words, and, rushing forward, hastily formed a ring around two playmates who stood in the middle of the road, their hats off, eyes glaring, fists clenched, while they panted with anger, and were on the point of flying at one another with the fury of young wildcats.

The spiral marble staircase echoed his clattering flight; scrub-women heard him coming and fled; he leaped a pail of water and a mop; several old gentlemen flattened themselves against the wall to give him room; and a blond young person with pencils in her hair lisped “Gee!” as he whizzed past and plunged through the storm-doors, which swung back, closing behind him with a hollow thwack.

The present romance, the second in the Mysterious Island triad, was originally issued in Paris with the title of L’Abandonné. Jules Verne’s list of stories already ran then to some twenty volumes—a number which has since grown to almost Dumasien proportions. L’Abandonné, like its two companion tales, ran its course as a serial through the Magasin Illustré of education and recreation, before its issue as a boy’s story-book. Its success in both forms seems to have established a record in the race for popularity and a circulation in both the French and English fields of current literature. The present book was translated into English by the late W. H. G. Kingston; and is printed in Everyman’s Library by special exclusive arrangement with Messrs. Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd.

Romain Rolland was a lifelong pacifist. He protested against the first World War in Above the Battle (Chicago, 1916).
