KANDARIYATHANA KANDEN

Ilango Adigal’s Tamil classic, Shilappadikaram presents life with all its flaws but also with hope.
KANNANAI THEDI

Kautilya Arthashastra
In this book, the author has tried to explain whether a pre-modern state policy strategist and author, Kautilya, who addressed statecraft in a scholarly fashion, might bear a meaning for contemporary management Studies. Kautilya, a near-contemporary of Aristotle and Alexander the Great, viewed administration as a central feature of statecraft. Kautilya’s Arthashastra can be translated as ‘Textbook of Statecraft and Political Economy’. It has in its core, diplomacy, and strategy and is an example of non-Western literature that should be read as part of the “realist” state administration. Its prescriptions are especially relevant for foreign policy today. The knowledge provided in it offers indispensable means for maintaining and expanding the security and power of the state. Through 15 case studies, this book explores Kautilya’s doctrine of management, state intelligence and statecraft, as well as its contemporary relevance, in a ‘scale-model’ approach, as to demonstrate the validity and meaningfulness of pursuing research today on a broader scale, as well as with greater depth for management studies.

Khudiram Bose
“To curb the rising tide of Indian nationalism, Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy, partitioned Bengal in 1905. The outcome however, went counter to the expectations of the British. It evoked a nationalist upsurge of an extreme and violent nature, in which several young Indians resorted to terrorist tactics, The more ruthless the repression, the more violent did the expression of nationalism become. It was to this brand of nationalism that Khudiram Bose belonged. He was hanged by the British for hurling a bomb at a phaeton, which he mistakenly thought to be carrying Kingsford, the judge of Calcutta.
Following his hanging, the government rounded many revolutionaries in Calcutta. At Alipore began the hearing of the first case of large-scale conspiracy, led by Aurobindo Ghosh. C.R. Das was the Defence Counsel for this case. Inside the jail, a new turn was given to the freedom struggle by a startling incident in which Naren Gossain, the approver of the case, was shot dead by Indian revolutionaries. Aurobindo Ghosh ended his life as the Saint of Pondicherry and C.R. Das as Desh Bandhu. “

Knowing your parent
Many kids announce the onset of adolescence with a dramatic change in their behaviour around their parents or elders. They begin to separate from their moms and dads and try to become more independent. At the same time, children of this age are increasingly aware of how others, especially their peers, see them and are desperately trying to fit into the current fads and trends.
Moreover, there is a vast generation gap between the teenagers and their parents or elders. Times have changed and with the advent of new and modern developments in science and technology, life has become faster and easier. There has been a drastic transformation in our lifestyle, and this has in turn brought about considerable changes in our behaviour, dressing styles, eating habits, modes of recreation, etc.
Hence, due to the above factors, there arises continuous conflict of thoughts, beliefs and values between the parents or elders and the teenagers irrespective of the families, religions, or strata of the society they belong to. The author in this book, Knowing Your Parents has incorporated various such conflicts in the form of interesting Diary Entry from the diary of reflecting their views and grievances on several subjects. Each of the Diary Entry is followed by a Parental Tip advising parents to deal intelligently and patiently according to the issue concerned. This is further complemented by an expert advice of a Counsellor, who acts as a judge providing an impartial and amicable solution to the problem in each case.
So, this is a ‘must read’ for both the youngsters of today to bridge the generation gap which is deepening day by day.
